A New publication of the Egyptian Center for Economic And Social Rights The Role of Civil Society in Creating Social Capital A Study Case of NGOs in Egypt
The Egyptian Center for Economic And Social Rights has the pleasure to launch a new series of studies and researches that closely relates and affects economic and social rights and helps to mature the debate, visions and thoughts on those rights. The Egyptian Center for Economic And Social Rights is interested in presenting youth initiatives in this regard.
The Egyptian Center for Economic And Social Rights is pleased to announce the first publication in this series , the research ” The Role of Civil Society in Creating Social Capital ,A Study Case of NGOs in Egypt”. The research is a Masters degree thesis prepared by Inji Mohamed Abd ElHamid , supervised by Mostafa Kamel ElSayed , political sciences department , faculty of economics and political sciences , Cairo Uni.
The discussion committee approved the thesis and Inji received a master’s degree with distinction on 22/2/2009. The committee was formed of the professors : Mostafa Kamel ElSayed , supervisor and the examiners Shadia Fat’hy , faculty of economics and political sciences , Cairo Uni. and Howaida Adly Roman , the national center for social and criminal studies.
ECESR publishes this research in the context of influencing the process of developing social and economic policies that would suit the Egyptian society that gets more complicated by time and leaves social capital a last and only resort.
The significance of this research lies in the concept it addresses , which is one of the basics in social sciences as it relates to other social issues such as development and democracy. As important as it is , very few Arabic publications in this topic are available, especially in the theoretical aspect. Most Arabic studies would refer to the World Bank definition of the concept.
Practical significance is coupled with the theoretical significance. Studying this concept in Egypt in relation to civil society provides means of using it in development programs as posed by the western model and meeting the needs of the Egyptian society at the same time.
The research addresses some key questions:
1- What is social capital ? How does it differ from other social capital forms?
2- How is social capital formed ? what are resources ? What are its techniques of formation ?
3- What are the forms of social capital
4- What is the role played by civil society in forming social capital ? What are prerequisites needed in civil society institutes to in order to play that role?
As for the Egyptian case , the research attempts to explore what is relevant to the civil society in general and what pertains only to NGOs as they are the biggest constituent of the civil society regarding the number of NGOs and their membership figures. NGOs are the nearest to the Egyptian citizen. This exploration is done through answering the following questions:
1- What are the resources of social capital in Egypt ? Is the civil society in Egypt considered a main resource for social capital?
2-What forms of social capital are provided by civil society? What are the factors affecting this role, regarding both institutes and surroundings?
We wish that this study will be an added value to the Arabic jurist library.
We wish it will contribute to stir and deepen the debate on economic and social rights and how to enhance them.
