Two New Court Rulings Order Altreeq Newspaper to Pay Nearly EGP 250,000 in Compensation for Arbitrary Dismissal

By the end of 2024, the Egyptian Center’s legal team achieved two separate court victories, securing rulings in favor of male and female journalists and against Altreeq newspaper, published by Safwa for Journalism. The rulings required the newspaper to pay nearly EGP 250,000 in compensation for their arbitrary dismissal, along with payments for the notice period, unused leave balances, and overdue salaries.

In case No. 1971 of 2023, filed by the Egyptian Center on behalf of “Iman A. A.,” the 10th Labor Circuit of the North Giza Court, on December 31, 2024, ordered the defendant company to pay EGP 151,533 in material and moral damages, in addition to payments for the notice period, unused leave, and overdue salaries.

Similarly, in case No. 1963 of 2023, filed on behalf of “Mina S. S.,” the court ruled during the same session that the defendant company must pay EGP 88,949 as material and moral compensation, along with the same additional entitlements.

Over the course of 2024, the Egyptian Center successfully obtained compensation rulings for six journalists from Al-Tariq newspaper, which is owned by Safwa for Journalism, Printing, and Publishing.

The Center filed lawsuits after several Al-Tariq journalists were unexpectedly denied entry to their workplace in November 2023. Security personnel barred their access without any legitimate reason, violating labor laws, press regulations, and journalistic work principles.

The affected journalists lodged incident reports at the Agouza Police Station and filed a collective complaint with the Agouza Labor Office.

When attempts at an amicable resolution failed, the Labor Office referred the cases to the competent labor court. The North Giza Primary Court ultimately ruled in the journalists’ favor, awarding compensation for arbitrary dismissal, the notice period, and unused leave balances.
