The Egyptian Center obtains a judgment compensating three journalists at “Roayah News Network” with an amount of 383.000 Egyptian pounds for their arbitrary dismissal
The Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights ECESR has obtained a judgment from the North Giza Court of First Instance, awarding compensation of 383.000 Egyptian pounds to three journalists working at “Roayah News Network” for their arbitrary dismissal, notice period, and vacation balance.
The lawsuit, filed by the center on behalf of a group of journalists employed by the company responsible for the news site, dates back to July 29, 2022. At that time, they were surprised by being prevented from working, and the company’s security personnel refused their entry to the workplace without providing a justifiable reason. This action violated labor laws, press regulations, and the nature of journalistic work.
Subsequently, the workers approached the Agouza Police Department, where they filed a report documenting the incident of being barred from entering the workplace, recorded under administrative number 5494 for the year 2022 in Agouza. On August 3, 2022, they also filed a collective complaint at the Kafr Taherms Labor Office, recording complaint No. 573 of 2022.
After unsuccessful attempts at an amicable settlement, the journalists requested the labor office to refer the complaint to the specialized labor court. The case was listed on the docket of the South Giza Court of First Instance, and after the legal proceedings, the court issued its decision on October 30, 2023, awarding compensation for arbitrary dismissal, notice period, and vacation balance.
