Raising the compensation value for “Roayah News Network” journalists, who were arbitrarily dismissed to 563,000 pounds after a new ruling obtained by the Egyptian Center

The Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) obtained a ruling to compensate a journalist who worked at “Roayha News Network” with an amount of 180,000 pounds for being arbitrarily dismissed, in addition to compensation for the leave balance and notice period.

The North Giza Court of First Instance ruled in case No. 2118 of 2022 in favor of journalist “Mahmoud T” against “Roayah News Network,” awarding him 180,000 pounds for arbitrary dismissal, notice period, and leave balance.

The center had previously obtained 3 judgments on October 30, 2023, in favor of 3 journalists against the network, compensating them with 383,000 pounds, Bringing the total compensation issued in favor of journalists against “Roayah” to 563,000 pounds.

Several journalists working for the Roayah News Network were surprised on July 29, 2022, by being prevented from entering their workplace without a valid reason, in violation of labor laws, press regulations, and the nature of journalistic work.

The journalists resorted to the Egyptian Center for legal support. The center’s lawyers filed a complaint with the Al-Agouza Police Department to document the incident of being prevented from entering the workplace, registered under No. 5494 of 2022 in Al-Agouza. Moreover, they directed them to file a collective complaint at the Kfar Tahrmous Labor Office, and indeed, on August 3, 2022, the complaint was filed under No. 573 of 2022. After failing to reach a peaceful settlement, the journalists requested the Labor Office to refer the complaint to the relevant labor court for adjudication.

As a result, the lawyers of the center, acting as agents for a group of journalists, filed the lawsuits registered in the schedule of the North Giza Court of First Instance, and the court issued its judgment to compensate them for arbitrary dismissal, notice period, and leave balance, in its session held on October 30, 2023, with judgments totaling 383,000 pounds, before being increased to 563,000 pounds.
