Ninth Legal Victory in Six Months .. Court Orders Al-Tareeq Newspaper to Pay EGP 64,000 Compensation to Journalist for Arbitrary Dismissal

The Egyptian Center obtained a ruling issued by the 10th Labor Circuit of the North Giza Primary Court, obliging *Al-Treeq* newspaper published by Al-Safwa Company for Journalism, Printing, and Publishing to compensate journalist “T. J.” with 64,000 Egyptian pounds for arbitrary dismissal, in addition to compensation for the notice period, outstanding salary from the past year, and accrued vacation balance.
The ruling, dated December 31, 2024, was issued in Labor Lawsuit No. 1960 of 2023 before the North Giza Primary Labor Circuit.
This marks the ninth ruling against Al-Treeq newspaper between June and December 2024, bringing the total compensation amount to over one million Egyptian pounds.
At the end of 2024, lawyers from the Egyptian Center successfully secured two additional separate rulings in favor of a female journalist and a male journalist, obliging Al-Treeq to compensate them with nearly 250,000 EGP for arbitrary dismissal, alongside compensation for the notice period, accrued vacation balance, and outstanding salaries.
In Lawsuit No. 1971 of 2023, filed by the Egyptian Center on behalf of “Eman A. A.,” the 10th Labor Circuit of the North Giza Primary Court ruled during its session on December 31, 2024, to oblige the defendant company to pay 151,533 EGP as material and moral compensation, in addition to compensation for the notice period, accrued vacation balance, and outstanding salary.
In Lawsuit No. 1963 of 2023, filed by the Center on behalf of “Mina S. S.,” the court ordered the defendant company, during the same session, to pay 88,949 EGP as material and moral compensation, along with compensation for the notice period, accrued vacation balance, and outstanding salary.
The Egyptian Center’s lawyers had previously succeeded in securing rulings to compensate six journalists at Al-Tareeq during June and July 2024.
The Center had initiated lawsuits on behalf of a group of Al-Treeq journalists after they were abruptly barred from work in November 2023, when security personnel at the newspaper refused them entry to their workplace without legal justification—a violation of labor law provisions, press regulation laws, and the nature of journalistic work.
Following this, the journalists went to the Agouza Police Department to file incident reports documenting their exclusion from the workplace and submitted a collective complaint to the Agouza Labor Office.
After amicable settlement efforts failed, the journalists requested that the Labor Office refer the complaint to the competent labor court. The case was registered at the North Giza Primary Court, and following proceedings, the court ruled to compensate them for arbitrary dismissal, the notice period, and accrued vacation balances.
