Defendant’s Detention Extended for 45 Days on Charges of “Misusing Social Media” in Connection with Posts About Palestine

The Cairo Criminal Court, convening in a consultation chamber at the Badr Court Complex, extended the pretrial detention of Mohamed Hamed Abdelghafar for an additional 45 days on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, pending investigations in Case No. 4092 of 2024, under the jurisdiction of the Supreme State Security Prosecution. This marks his first consultation hearing in connection with the case.

Abdelghafar, 27, a father of two children—his eldest aged five—was taken into custody by security forces from his residence in Abu Homs, Beheira Governorate, on August 28, 2024. His detention followed social media posts concerning Palestine shared on his Facebook account.

The prosecution has leveled multiple charges against him, including membership in a banned organization, spreading false news and information, and misusing social media platforms.
