“Aga Misdemeanor” Court sentenced Mohamed Adel for 4 years under charges of spreading false news.

On Saturday, September 2, 2023, Aga District Misdemeanor Court, in Dakahlia Governorate, sentenced Activist Mohamed Adel for 4 years under charges of spreading false news in Case No.2981 of 2013.

Few weeks ago, Adel completed 5 years in pretrial detention pending investigation in Case No.4118 of 2018 Shirbin- Dakahlia Administration, in addition to a previous case in which he was released. In both lawsuits, he faced the same charges based on two reports against him accusing him of charges, including misusing social media websites by writing posts through an alleged ownership of a Facebook account, while on the other hand, he exceeded the legal period of pre-trial detention in the two lawsuits.

In overall, Adel has so far spent a third of his life between imprisonment, police surveillance, and restricted freedom for more than 8 years in which he didn’t enjoy freedom just for few months. This young man who is in his thirties is absent from his family and beloved ones throughout all this period of time, even he got married to his beloved inside the prison.

In light of the recent openness in the file of detainees, which resulted in releasing a number of prisoners of conscience in release lists and presidential pardons, the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) calls on the responsible authorities, starting from the Presidency of the Republic, passing through the Presidential Pardon Committee and the Public Prosecution, to quickly intervene to end the suffering of Adel and his Family, in addition to ending and closing all pending cases.

The Center indicates that despite releasing all leaders of April 6 Movement, and a number of prisoners of conscience through decisions to release and presidential pardons, Adel is still in detention without any justification, which on the other hand his suffering continues inside his imprisonment, and the suffering of his family continues due to his absence.
