New Victory: 4 Rulings Order “Al-Treeq” Newspaper to Compensate 4 Journalists 455,000 EGP for Arbitrary Dismissal
The Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) has secured four rulings from the North Giza Primary Court, ordering “Al-Treeq” newspaper, published by Safwa for Journalism, Printing, and Publishing, to compensate four journalists with a total of EGP 455,000 for arbitrary dismissal, notice period compensation, accrued leave, and overdue salary.
The lawsuits filed by the center on behalf of a group of journalists from “Al-Treeq”, date back to November 2023. The journalists were unexpectedly barred from entering their workplace by the newspaper’s security personnel without any legitimate justification, in violation of the Labor Law, the Press Regulation Law, and the nature of journalistic work.
Following this incident, the journalists reported the situation to Agouza Police Station and filed a formal complaint at the Agouza Labor Office.
When amicable settlement attempts failed, the journalists requested the labor office to refer the complaint to the competent labor court. The cases were registered at the North Giza Primary Court. After deliberations, the court ruled on June 27, 2024, to compensate the journalists for arbitrary dismissal, notice period, and accrued leave.
The court awarded “Nahla H” EGP 206,000, “Mohamed S” EGP 112,000, “Ragab Y” EGP 67,000, and “Salma A” EGP 71,000.
Mahmoud Abdelrahim, the center’s lawyer specializing in labor cases, welcomed the rulings, viewing it as a continuation of the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights’ legal victories in consistently defending workers’ rights across various labor courts.
Abdelrahim also highlighted that earlier this month, the labor court ruled in favor of journalist “Somaya A M” against the legal representative of “Al-Treeq” newspaper. The court affirmed Somaya’s right to a total compensation of EGP 186,700 for arbitrary dismissal, notice period, overdue salary for the last two years, and accrued leave.
