Pretrial Detention Exceeds Legal Limit: Detention of Two Al Ahly Fans Extended for 45 More Days on Terrorism Charges
On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the Cairo Criminal Court, convening at the Badr Court Complex, ordered the renewal of the pretrial detention of Ahmed Mamoun Shaker and Ali Othman Ali for an additional 45 days, pending investigation in Case No. 508 of 2023 (State Security Prosecution Register).
The two young men were originally arrested in April 2023 while on their way to attend an Al Ahly football match at Cairo International Stadium. They were held at the Nasr City Police Station for two days, after which the Public Prosecution ordered their release on bail.
However, they were not released. Instead, they were transferred to the Supreme State Security Prosecution, which charged them with joining a terrorist organization, financing terrorism, spreading false news, and using social media accounts for these purposes.
Their pretrial detention continues to be renewed, despite the fact that they have exceeded the maximum duration permitted by law for preventive detention under Egyptian legislation.
