Twelfth Ruling in One Year: EGP 144,000 Awarded to Al-Treeq Journalists for Arbitrary Dismissal

The North Giza Primary Court has ruled in favor of two journalists, ordering Al-Treeq newspaper—published by Safwa Press, Printing, and Publishing Company—to pay a total of EGP 144,000 in compensation for their arbitrary dismissal. The awarded amount includes compensation for the notice period, accrued leave, and outstanding salaries.
The Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) filed multiple lawsuits on behalf of the journalists after they were denied access to their workplace without legal grounds in November 2023.
According to the case file, the journalists were unexpectedly prevented by the newspaper’s security personnel from entering the premises, without being provided with any lawful justification—an act constituting a clear violation of both the Egyptian Labor Law and the Press Regulation Law.
Subsequently, the journalists filed an official incident report at Agouza Police Station and submitted a collective complaint to the local Labor Office. After attempts at amicable settlement failed, the matter was referred to the competent labor court.
On May 27, 2025, the court issued its judgment, finding that the journalists had been arbitrarily and unlawfully dismissed, and affirming their right to receive full financial entitlements.
This ruling marks the twelfth judgment obtained by ECESR’s legal team in favor of Al-Treeq journalists since 2024.
