Pretrial Detention of Alexandria Palestine Banner Detainees Renewed for 45 Days on Charges of “Joining a Terrorist Organization”

On Monday, 12 May 2025, the Terrorism Circuit of the Cairo Criminal Court, convened at the Badr Court Complex, ordered the renewal of the pretrial detention of five young men from Alexandria for an additional 45 days, pending investigation in State Security Case No. 1644 of 2024—commonly referred to in the media as the “Palestine Banner” case.

The individuals were arrested by security forces after allegedly displaying a banner in solidarity with Palestine on a bridge in Alexandria. The Supreme State Security Prosecution charged them with joining a terrorist organization, participating in an unauthorized assembly, and spreading false information.

Among the detainees is prominent labor activist Shady Mohamed, a founding member of the Permanent Conference of Alexandria Workers and the Popular Committee for Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The other detainees include Abdallah Ahmed, Omar Al-Ansary, Shehab El-Din Ashraf, Youssef Yasser, and Mohamed Diab.
