Ninth Ruling in a Year: Court Orders Al-Treeq Newspaper to Pay Journalist Over EGP 100,000 for Arbitrary Dismissal

Lawyers from the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) have secured a court ruling obligating Al-Tareeq newspaper—published by Safwa for Journalism, Printing, and Publishing—to compensate journalist Dina M. A. with more than EGP 100,000 for her arbitrary dismissal. Moreover, the court awarded her compensation for the notice period, unused leave balance, and outstanding wages.

This verdict marks the ninth favorable ruling obtained by ECESR’s legal team on behalf of Al-Tareeq journalists since 2024.

In labor case No. 1954 of 2023, filed before the North Giza Labor Court on behalf of journalist Dina Mahmoud Aboul Fotouh, Panel 3 (Labor) ruled on April 23, 2025, to obligate the newspaper’s legal representative to pay EGP 16,000 in material and mora damages for arbitrary dismissal, EGP 5,067 for accrued but unused leave, EGP 8,000 for the notice period, and EGP 72,000 in unpaid wages for the period from May 1, 2022, to November 2, 2023.

The court further ordered the newspaper to provide the claimant with her employment documents and an official certificate of experience indicating her start and end dates of employment as well as the nature of her work. The court also awarded litigation expenses and EGP 75 in attorney fees.

Journalist Dina had joined Al-Tareeq on January 4, 2022, with a monthly salary of EGP 4,000. On November 4, 2023, she was denied access to the workplace by security staff without legal justification—an act in clear violation of Egypt’s labor law and press regulations.

Following this incident, she and several other dismissed colleagues filed police reports at Agouza Police Station and submitted a collective complaint to the Agouza Labor Office. After an amicable settlement attempt failed, the case was referred to the labor court, which issued its final ruling in the aforementioned session.

Throughout 2024 and 2025, ECESR lawyers have successfully obtained multiple court rulings awarding compensation to journalists dismissed without cause by Al-Tariq newspaper, a publication of Safwa for Journalism, Printing, and Publishing.
