Detention of Nourhan Daraz Extended for 45 Days Over Facebook Post Despite Critical Health Condition

On Monday, January 13, 2025, the Cairo Criminal Court, sitting in a consultative chamber at the Badr Courthouse, renewed the pretrial detention of Nourhan El-Sayed Ahmed Daraz for another 45 days in connection with Case No. 3528 of 2024.

Nourhan, a retired administrative director at the Directorate of Social Affairs, was arrested by security forces from her home in Hadayek Al-Ahram, Giza, on August 5, 2024. She was forcibly disappeared for 12 days before reappearing at the Supreme State Security Prosecution on August 17, 2024.

The charges against her stem from a Facebook post in which she criticized the political and economic situation. She was initially held for 15 days on accusations of belonging to a banned organization, receiving foreign funding, spreading false news, and misusing social media. She was subsequently transferred to 10th of Ramadan Women’s Prison.

Nourhan has voiced distress over being deprived of vital medication and blankets, despite suffering from serious health conditions. She requires surgery to remove a uterine tumor, depends on thyroid medication following a thyroidectomy, and has other chronic ailments necessitating ongoing medical supervision.

Her family has appealed to the authorities for her immediate release, highlighting her urgent need for medical treatment and the absence of legitimate legal justification for her continued detention.
