Court Orders “Al-Fagr” Newspaper to Pay Over EGP 45,000 in Compensation to Journalist for Arbitrary Dismissal
The North Giza Primary Court has issued a judgment compelling Al-Fagr newspaper to compensate journalist Ms. Hind S. H. in the amount of EGP 45,066, in connection with her arbitrary dismissal. The total award includes compensation for arbitrary termination, payment in lieu of notice, accrued unpaid wages, and the monetary equivalent of unused leave entitlements.
Specifically, in Case No. 1274 of 2024—heard before the Third Full Labor Circuit on March 26, 2025—the court ordered the defendant to pay EGP 6,000 in material and moral damages for the arbitrary termination of the employment contract, EGP 4,000 in lieu of the statutory notice period & EGP 33,133 in unpaid wages for the period from March 2023 through July 17, 2024. Besides paying EGP 1,933 as the cash equivalent for accrued but unused annual leave.
The judgment also obliges Al-Fagr to issue a certificate of employment (experience letter) to the claimant, return all her personal documents and academic certificates, and cover the full cost of litigation, including attorney’s fees, which were assessed at EGP 75.
The case stems from Ms. Hind Salem’s employment with Al-Fagr, which began in March 2023. She was employed as a journalist with a gross monthly salary of EGP 4,000. After the newspaper arbitrarily terminated her contract without legal grounds, the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights filed the claim on her behalf.
