The (ECESR) <\/span><\/span>praises<\/span><\/span> journalists on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, appreciating <\/span><\/span>their efforts in <\/span><\/span>raising <\/span><\/span>awareness, <\/span><\/span>information <\/span><\/span>accessibility and sharing, affirmi<\/span><\/span>ng <\/span><\/span>that <\/span><\/span>Press freedom <\/span><\/span>is an <\/span><\/span>integral part of human <\/span><\/span>rights in <\/span><\/span>general<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During <\/span><\/span>his speech, <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>Secretary General of the United Nations,<\/span><\/span> stated <\/span><\/span>that the increase <\/span><\/span>of controlling mass media <\/span><\/span>in the hands of few <\/span><\/span>persons, <\/span><\/span>and the fiscal collapse for dozens of independent <\/span><\/span>news foundations, together with the increase <\/span><\/span>in issuing national laws and bylaws that stifle <\/span><\/span>journalists, <\/span><\/span>all of that threatens<\/span><\/span> Press freedom.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The center <\/span><\/span>reminds that <\/span><\/span>whilst journalists <\/span><\/span>struggle in the battle of information accessibility<\/span><\/span> and disclosure of facts, <\/span><\/span>they face several obstacles that block their <\/span><\/span>performance to do their <\/span><\/span>work, including their professional and .economical conditions<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, <\/span><\/span>some <\/span><\/span>journalists <\/span><\/span>are<\/span><\/span> subjected to illegal <\/span><\/span>practices, <\/span><\/span>top of which <\/span><\/span>is the arbitrary <\/span><\/span>dismissal,<\/span><\/span> wage <\/span><\/span>manipulation <\/span><\/span>and so on.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Over the year, the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights obtained <\/span><\/span>a number of judicial rulings in favor of journalists against seven institutions, newspapers and websites, due to their arbitrary <\/span><\/span>dismissal without legal reasons and justifications. During these <\/span><\/span>lawsuits, the Center succeeded in obtaining <\/span><\/span>compensatios for those <\/span><\/span>journalists that exceeded half million pounds.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Egyptian Center greets journalists <\/span><\/span>in World Press Freedom Day, and <\/span><\/span>stresses the necessity <\/span><\/span>of providing effective <\/span><\/span>mechanisms to improve <\/span><\/span>the conditions of Press <\/span><\/span>workers <\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span>the declaration of<\/span><\/span> clear policies to combat arbitrary dismissal <\/span><\/span>in <\/span><\/span>news corporations, together with <\/span><\/span>launching <\/span><\/span>more freedoms in <\/span><\/span>journalism<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>and the removal of press ban <\/span><\/span>of<\/span><\/span> the blocked <\/span><\/span>news websites<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
