The Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights published a research paper on Thursday, February 29, 2024, titled “Refugees in Egypt… Escaping the Hell of War to the Challenges of Living in an Alternative Homeland,” addressing the issue of refugees and asylum seekers in Egyptian territories, which is one of the prominent challenges facing Egypt, both quantitatively due to the conditions in neighboring countries, and socially in terms of incitement campaigns, hatred, and racism, which claim that they are the cause of the economic crisis in the country. These campaigns have escalated to become a subject for comment in the media and statements by political officials, requiring urgent attention and intervention to promote tolerance, integration, and respect for diversity within Egyptian society.
\nWhile refugees in Egypt struggle to find a decent life in their alternative homeland, many of them find themselves forced to bear additional burdens that they should not have to bear in light of their actual inhumane conditions. At a time when they have fled their war-torn homelands, leaving behind everything they own to save their lives, many of them do not receive any support for basic services, due to the Egyptian government’s objection to the provisions that provide these services in refugee agreements, further exacerbating their actual worsening suffering.
\nMoreover, the Center’s paper addresses the reasons for the disparity in statistics on the number of refugees among state figures and UN organizations, the fact that the government bears the costs of their living, and the impact of this on their conditions.
\nFurthermore, the paper discusses the potential implications on foreigners residing in the country illegally, requiring the presence of an Egyptian host to regulate their status and residency, while also pointing out the repercussions of government actions and aggression on Gaza on the residents of the sector stranded in Egypt.
