This time they did not use force as they did in the past. Their orders were not to\u00a0arrest them for striking or instigating to strike (like what happened with 16 drivers, 13 of whom\u00a0are from Tanta). The orders was to call hundreds of train drivers to service in the armed forces\u00a0in a military capacity under the transportation department.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The drivers obtained the order of their conscription from the Central Agency for Public\u00a0Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). The orders read, \u201cIt was decided to commission you\u00a0to work in a military capacity in the service of the transportation department.\u201d The orders also\u00a0warned that those who are late to arrive at the set time and place will be punished by a 6-month\u00a0jail sentence or a LE5,000 fine, or both.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adding insult to injury, when the drivers arrived at the mobilization center for Railway Regiment\u00a039 at the Misr Station near al-Sharabiya housing, they found themselves detained, following the\u00a0failure of negotiations between them and the representatives of the intelligence services.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The drivers were demanding the cancellation of the commissioning orders, but their requests\u00a0were rejected and told the transportation minister refused to cancel the orders. Then they would\u00a0not let the drivers leave and left them there without food or water, from the morning of Tuesday\u00a09 April 2013, until the writing of this statement.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the other hand, instead of thinking about how to implement the workers\u2019 demands, which is\u00a0the real expression of social justice, one of the main demands of the revolution, the government\u00a0spent the last two years coming up with different ways to break the movement. At times it\u00a0tries to slander the workers claiming that they are riding the wave of the revolution and have\u00a0sectarian demands. At other times, it uses all forms of arbitrary dismissal and incarceration for<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">striking.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">When all failed to break the workers movement and to put an end to the worker\u2019s strikes and\u00a0peaceful protests for their rights, despite the arsenal of laws issued to criminalize sit-ins, strikes,\u00a0and demonstrations, the government is resorting to the army without justification.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Neither the army nor the government have the right to conscript anyone (especially for those\u00a0over 35 years old) except in specific cases of war and similar circumstances. Any decision of\u00a0this sort should also be issued through a declaration of public mobilization by the President of\u00a0the Republic, something that did not occur.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The current situation is an attempt to terrorize drivers into giving up their constitutional right to\u00a0strike or be sent to the military courts.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rejecting attempts to militarize the railway and terrorize Egypt\u2019s workers and train drivers, the\u00a0undersigned organizations declare their full solidarity with railway drivers in their just demands\u00a0for their rights and the rights of all Egyptians to safe means of transportation, as well as the right\u00a0to strike.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The undersigned call on the army not to interfere in the workers movement and on the\u00a0government to solve the problems faced by the workers and implement their demands, which it\u00a0always were fair, instead of attempts to break their movement.<\/div>\n<h4>Signatories:<\/h4>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Egyptian Federation for Independent Trade Unions<\/li>\n<li>Socialist Popular Alliance Party<\/li>\n<li>Revolutionary Socialists Movement<\/li>\n<li>Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights<\/li>\n<li>No to Military Trials for Civilians<\/li>\n<li>National Front for Justice and Democracy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time, the armed forces intervened, and in a blatant manner, to break up the strike by\u00a0railway drivers.
